SOUTH OGDEN — Coming soon — a smoother, wider 40th Street corridor connecting Wall Avenue and Harrison Boulevard.
Crews have been working on the upgrade of the section between Washington Boulevard and Gramercy Avenue in South Ogden since May 2017, and the work should be done by the end of June, according to South Ogden City Manager Matt Dixon. The road, which had consisted of a travel lane each way and a center turn lane in the segment, is being widened to two lanes each direction with a center turn lane.
The busy South Ogden segment, which helps link Weber State University to the east and the Riverdale Road commercial corridor to the west, gets congested at rush hour, creating traffic bottlenecks.
Traffic “will flow much better,” Dixon said. Officials had earlier projected the $7.1 million project — which should be finished at or under budget — would be done by May, but complications relocating utilities in the section slowed things, he said.
The 40th Street upgrade from Washington Boulevard to Jefferson Avenue was finished last year and the current focus has been on the section east of Jefferson to Gramercy Avenue. Crews this week will be pouring sidewalks and redoing driveway approaches in the section, Dixon said. Traffic each way, in the meantime, is still restricted to one lane pending completion.

Parallel to that work, South Ogden is resurfacing the 40th Street extension west of Washington Boulevard all the way to Wall Avenue — along Chimes View Drive, which hauls westbound traffic, and 40th Street, which carries eastbound vehicles. The $250,000 project starts this week.
The city of Ogden, meanwhile, is in the final stages of a $250,000 repaving project on 40th Street from Gramercy Avenue east to Harrison Boulevard, just east of the South Ogden project. The Ogden section of 40th is already five lanes wide, but the city decided to repave it in conjunction with the South Ogden upgrade so the entire stretch of roadway has a new feel.
“We wanted it to be a good ride all the way to Harrison,” said Justin Anderson, the Ogden City engineer. Repaving and striping is done, but work remains on the manhole and valve covers in the roadway, which should be done within 10 days or so.
